Hydroseeding - what is it?

Hydroseeding is a grass planting process sometimes refered to as spray seed. This process is fast, efficient, and economical. The process is more effective than conventional seeding and more economical than conventional turf. The process begins by preparing a batch of material consisting of mulch, seed, fertilizer and water. The batch of material is mixed in the tank of a Hydroseeding machine, and then pumped from the tank and sprayed onto the ground. After being sprayed onto the soil, the material appears as a green foam or soil coating. The mulch material enhances initial growth by providing a micro-environment beneficial to seed germination. The mulch holds the seed in place on the ground and helps hold moisture in the soil. Mulch also moderates the impact of raindrop impact.

Hydroseeding Spray on Lawn

Hydroseeding is the perfect alternative to turf and will give you a new lush green lawn in 4 –  6 weeks. Until now the most common way to install a new lawn has been to purchase turf with all the extra cost. Hydroseeding is the application of spraying your seed, fertilizer and fibre mulch directly onto your readily prepared soil. The spray seed is then held in place on the soil surface by the fibre mulch, no more seed loss from those sudden unexpected bursts of wind and rain.

Hydroseeding Advantages:

Lower Cost – Save up to 70% on your new lawn

Environmentally friendly –  Lower carbon foot print and good for the environment

Better root structure –  Seed is grown in your gardens own soil

Up to 50% water saving - when compared to watering turf

Speed – Rapid germination of seed results in a thicker lush greenlawn.

Health – Hydro Seeded lawns start out healthy as the seed is grown in the soil it’s going to live in

What we do?

We specialize in the final steps of your project. We can provide a plush, thickly carpeted lawn as a cost effective alternative to turf. Hydroseeding, sometimes referred to as spray seed or spray on grass is a process used for planting grasses and other seeds used for soil erosion protection. The process is fast, efficient, economical, and as effective as turf.

Where is it used?

Hydroseeding came around in the 1950’s and shortly became a popular method for growing grass or for erosion control. The process was soon after adopted in the U.K. in the 1960’s and is now the second most widely process for laying a new lawn. In Australia the state and federal governments have been using Hydroseeding as a form of erosion control for many years and it has also been used in parts of the world such as the Panama Canal as a part of an erosion control program. Today Hydroseeding has become increasing popular in new home development as a cost effective alternative option to laying turf.

How it works?

The process begins by preparing a batch of material consisting of mulch, (a product made from organic cellulose), seed, fertilizer, and water. The products are mixed in a Hydromulching machine, and then pumped from the tank, and sprayed onto the ground. After being sprayed onto the prepared soil, the material appears as a green layer, or soil coating. The hydro-mulch material performs a number of different functions which are the keys to the success of this process. As the mulch dries, it forms a micro-environment protecting the seed bed from the elements. It moderates the impact of rain drops, provides erosion resistance, and most importantly, in dry or drought conditions reduces moisture evaporation from the soil.

Why choose Hydroseeding?

  1. Speed

An area that has been Hydroseeding and properly watered will start to grow in about 7 - 10 days. Under normal conditions, the new lawn will be well established in 4-6 weeks.

  1. Cost

Purchasing turf is expensive, even if you know how to lay it yourself. If you can't lay it yourself, the labour charges make turf extremely expensive. Hydroseeding will cost 50%-80% less than turf and give you an equally beautiful lawn.

  1. Health

Hydro Seeded grass starts out in the soil you place it in- it is not subjected to transplant shock that can occur when your soil is different from the original soil the turf was grown in. Unlike turf which is also subject to drying out during transport. Hydro Seeded lawns grow healthy and full to crowd out weeds and resist disease.

  1. Coverage

Have you ever seen a turfed lawn with seams showing?

Or watched a hand-seeded lawn grow in patchy and sparse? And what about slopes?

Hydroseeding creates an evenly covered area that forms a crust to hold seed in place and retain water and fertilizer. The result is a full, lush lawn.

What to expect?

Before an area can be seeded a top soil of around 100mm needs to be laid and levelled even. When the area is ready the Hydroseeding can begin and will take on average no more than one to two hours to cover an area around 500 meters. If watered correctly you should see the grass start to grow within 7 – 10 days depending on the current climate and weather patterns. After 4 – 6 weeks the grass will be starting to look thick and is now ready for mowing. With repeated watering and small trims you will notice the grass becoming stronger, bushier and healthier.

Care and maintenance

The success of growing grass is almost always related to water, either too much or not enough. If water is scarce, good mulch helps the soil to absorb moisture and then insulate the soil, making that moisture is available for the plant as long as possible. Soil moisture is the key to germination and initial growth. If too much water comes at one time, such as heavy rains or too much watering, the seed must be held in place. Good mulch is an erosion resistant material, and reduces or eliminates soil erosion. Erosion control is a key function of good mulch material. Mulch can be the great water moderator, and the probability of growing grass successfully is enhanced with a good mulch application. Water an installation twice a day for at least 20 minutes, once early morning and again late afternoon or evening.
